About the Park

Abundant in wooded hills and scenic valleys, Nine Eagles State Park is one of southern Iowa’s most picturesque state parks. Native plant species are scattered throughout the park and provide excellent cover for birds and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy six miles of bridle trails and nine miles of hiking trails. Shaded picnic spots with tables and fireplaces can be found throughout the 1,100-acre park.

Plan Your Visit

  • Hike or bike the three-mile trail that winds around the lake and connects to the campgrounds. Trails consist of crushed rock and grass and lead through rugged terrain and remnants of native prairie. A seven-mile trail is also available for equestrian use. Cross-country ski and snowmobile on seven miles of multi-use trails in the winter.
  • Fish for bass, channel catfish, bluegill and more on the 64-acre lake at Nine Eagles. The lake’s timbered watershed makes it one of the clearest artificial impoundments in Iowa. Only rowboats and electric motors are permitted on the lake. A fishing jetty provides great shoreline access and a fish cleaning station and boat ramp is also located near the lake.
  • Stay overnight in a family cabin or camp in one of three campgrounds at the park. The one-bedroom cabin contains a fold-out futon, full kitchen, bathroom and covered deck. The campgrounds offer both electric and non-electric sites, modern showers, restrooms and a trailer dump station. Primitive equestrian campsites contain fire rings, pit toilets, water and hitching rails. One-fourth of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and advance reservations can be made through the the online reservation system for Nine Eagles State Park. Please call the park office to reserve the cabin.
  • Reserve one of two open shelters for an outdoor gathering during your visit. Several shaded picnic areas with tables and fire grills are located throughout the park. The shelters can be reserved through the the online reservation system for Nine Eagles State Park.
